Split green moong dal is a very simple and easy dal to make and it is very light on the stomac.Usually the north Indians make a Khichidi with this dal and rice when people are unwell and want to eat something light.I usually make the whole moong dal often but this one i am trying for the first time.

Kadalai Urundai Recipe/Karthigai Deepam Recipes

Kadalai Urundai/Nilakadalai Urundai is a favourite sweet of mine because it is healthy and made with Jaggery and not sugar.Whenever i get a sweet craving i pop in one Kadalai mittai, be it squares or rounds. They are crispy, crunchy and tasty. However peanuts have a connection to my childhood. My grandmother used to bring peanuts from her farm when she was visiting us and we used to roast, boil and eat them in all possible ways. And most of all we used to call her "Kadalai Patti" like my children used to call their thatha "Laddu".She used to make these sweets for karthigai. Now a days i buy the Rajaram peanut candies and eat them once in a while.Tomorrow being Karthigai Deepam i thought let me make these urundais today because yesterday i finished making the Nel and Aval pori urundais.I just went to the stores to buy some more pagu vellam,Peanuts( i have used ready roasted ones)and bought some agal vilakkus(few additions this year)....

Jeera Podi

After all the diwali sweets and savouries everyone must be longing for some simple easily digestible food.Yes I made this "Jeera Podi" today which is light on the stomach. This recipe is from my grand mother. She used to eat this podi with hot rice every day.My mother used to make and store it in a glass(horlicks) bottle  for a month because it was needed every day.My grandmom used to offer the first few bites of the hot rice to us as kids every day when we used to sit with her for lunch but we used to enjoy it once in a while.Every one who came to our house and saw my grand mom eating this became a fan of this podi and took some podi with them and took the recipe also with them.
It has Cumin seeds which makes digestion very easy and pepper which is also very good for health my grandmom said we could have it after delivery and while feeding the baby.Need not say about the goodness of cumin, pepper, etc. so make this podi and enjoy its benefits and taste when you want to feel light and after a feast.

Kalakand Recipe/Easy Diwali Sweet

I have been trying these easy diwali sweets now.I just posted Besan ladoo which was also very easy.Kalakand is a very easy sweet made with paneer and condensed milk. There is no ghee, oil or deep fry so it is pretty simple. You can add a little flaour of your own choice at the end like cardamom powder, kesar strings or rose essence etc.I have not added any flavour because no one likes the flavour in this sweet in my house so i just made it plain.I like the milky flavour and taste so just stuck to that one.

Besan Ladoo/Easy Diwali Sweets

It has been so busy with Navarathiri and Golu that I could not spend much time for the blog. The whole nine days were so hectic with people visiting and we were getting their vetrilai pakku ready and of course we were also visiting people almost every day.I made a Sundal on every single day and made Aval puttu on Friday.I wanted to make some easy sweet during Navrathri and i found this ladoo recipe apt during this season. It is very similar to Rawa ladoo and really easy and quick one to make. Here is the recipe for the ladoo.........

Karamani Sundal/Sweet and Salt Karamani Sundal

Karamani or black eyed pea or Lobia is a popular bean made as sundal during Navarathiri. There are two types of Karamani - brown  and white in colour. We usually make sweet sundal with the brown Karamani.I make the sweet sundal also with some salt and red chillies but some people make it only sweet i.e only with jaggery and coconut. You can make it either way.I feel it is more tasty with salt and red chillies so that it is spicy and at the same time sweet.Otherwise it is easy to prepare and does not require a long soaking time.It is enough if you soak it for 3-4 hours and pressure cook it for few whistles.Today being first day of Navarathri I made both the versions of this sundal.

Kollu Soup/Horse gram Soup/Weight Loss Recipe

Horse Gram is a superfood.Few health benefits of horse gram is it is very rich in iron, calcium and protein  In fact it has the highest calcium content among pulses and is one of the richest vegetarian sources of protein. It is low in fat and high in carbohydrate content. It is very helpful in treating obesity and diabetis because of its low lipid and sodium content.
Now  I have been trying out a lot of weight loss recipes. While i was talking to my friends about these recipes my friend (Radha) mentioned to me about this horse gram and she makes soup out of this.I tried this soup first in her house and tried out in my house. It is quiet simple to make except that the dal has to be soaked for 8-10 hours and pressure cooked well.Other than the soaking and pressure cooking  it is easy to prepare. You can alter the ingredients according to your taste and preference. There is no strict rule of ingredients or quantity in this recipe.
I made it this way......

Milagu Kuzhambu/Pepper Kuzhambu

Milagu Kuzhambu or Pepper Kuzhambu is a traditional, spicy and tangy kuzhambu which has lot of medicinal values because it is made with lot of black pepper and cumin seeds. It is made mostly on rainy days becuase it can help treat your cold or prevent you from getting a cold.It can be Prepared a little thick and can be stored outside for 2 days and  in the fridge for 10-15days.
When i think of this kuzhambu this incident comes to my mind. Once when we went to Banglore we made a sudden visit to one of our relatives house. They wanted us to have dinner and then only leave and that aunty pulled out a bottle which had this pepper kuzhambu in a thick form, she heated up some water and mixed with this paste and made a delicious kuzhambu in just few seconds. She also made a simple mixed vegetable salad and roasted pappad to go with it.We after eating all our meals outside(in restaurants) were really craving for some simple home cooked food and it was so delicious  especially in the Banglore climate eventhough our relatives felt the food was too simple for guests we really enjoyed the Kuzhambu with some hot rice and ghee!!!!

Asoka Halwa

I have reached a small milestone  in my blogging so i decided to celebrate myself by making this favourite sweet of mine and posting it too.Asoka Halwa is typically a traditional south Indian sweet made for weddings and during many festivals. It is not very popular or easily available in sweet shops like a Mysore Pa,Wheat Halwa or a Kaju Katli. The north Indian version of Moong Dal Halwa is done differently  and stored for a longer period.I look forward to tasting Ashoka Halwa when i go for a wedding especially in the breakfast menu in a banana leaf Yum Yum!!!

Ragda Patties

Ragada Patties  is a very popular street food in North India and western parts of India. It is one of my favourites.I am fond of almost all the chaat except a few like dal kachori and dahi puri.Whichever chaat is a little spicy and tasty i just love them.We mostly eat our chaat in Gangotri or Ajnabi these are the two places it is very good and tasty according to me.I always tell them to make mine a little more sweet than the usual(to add more sweet chutney)because i like the sweetness more in them.
Today i made this chaat because i was craving for some chaat and  i really got bored of the usual cooking like sambar, rasam and curry.First i made the two chutneys and kept them ready so that it is easier while serving, then i made the Ragada which is prepared with dried white peas cooked with onions tomatoes and spices.Lastly made the patties with boiled potatoes and spices which is shallow fried.Just before serving all of these are assembled in a interesting way to get a spicy, tangy, sweet dish called "Ragada Patties".

Rawa Pongal

Rawa Pongal is a easy version of the normal Ven Pongal made with rice and dal.In Rawa Pongal instead of Rice we use rawa which cooks easy and faster and little light on the stomac. It goes well with a simple Coconut chutney otherwise you can serve it with Tiffin Sambar which is a great combination and tastes heavely.

Spanish Gazpacho

I saw this new recipe in Food Food Channel i found it very intersting and yummy. You can call it a cold soup or a summer drink. It is very popular in the South of Spain. The original Gazpachos are made mainly with tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, cucumbers and few other vegetables pureed with vinegar, pepper, salt and chilled, but now there are lot of variations!!when i saw this recipe i liked it because you cannot feel the raw smell of the vegetables and the grapes makes it tasty and naturally sweet.

Corn Chaat/Salad

Corn is one of our favourite snack.I got introduced to butter corn when i used to live in Singapore they used to apply butter on the whole boiled corn and the aroma of corn used to spread throught the supermarket.Later we found butter corn, masala corn and even mexican flavoured corn selling every nook and corner of chennai and sure in most of the cities.
I love the butter corn and i feel it is a healthy snack inspite of a little butter in it.I love all the corn subzis and pulaos and the chinese dishes with corn kernels and the babycorn.
Coming to this simple corn salad or chaat it is a tasty and easy chaat to make.Even without the chutneys it tastes very good and gives the satisfaction of eating a chaat.I am trying out all these kinds of simple easy and healthy evening snack and this is the perfect one for those who love corn.My daughter really loves this one.....

Kaddu Ki Subzi/Pumpkin subzi

I have always wondered  if North Indians even  cooked Pumpkin because i have always seen them making subzis with potatoes, cauliflower, peas, radish and capsicum and sometimes the big brinjal.I have noticed the Gujarathis cooking some vegetables like sweet potato, raw banana cluster beans etc.I recently found some recipes with pumkin.
I have some extra ounce of pumkin from my neighbour's farm so i fisnhed making one round of sambar kootu etc now i thought let me try out something new for chapathis and when i was looking for recipes i found this one.It was simple and easy to make(my style)so immediately tried it out.It is a flavourful subzi with fenugreek seeds and tangy and sweet with jaggery and mango powder.

Paneer Subz Shahi Korma/Paneer Vegetable Shahi Korma

Shahi(means Royal),yes,Shahi korma is a rich nawabi gravy with almonds, cashews and fresh cream. It is a mild and slightly sweet gravy. It goes well with Masala pooris,Nans,Kulchas and any pulao rice.
I am not a big fan of white gravy but when it is combined with a spicy bread or a pulao it is fine.My daughter loves white gravies a lot and whenever we go out for dinner we have a small fight over it becuase other than her no one eats that dish and finally we order a white gravy dish for her.

Tomato rasam

Rasam is one of the important and easiest dishes made in South Indian daily menu.Even though you have a number of yummy dishes on the menu no one would skip a tasty rasam. Now a days they have even started serving Rasam like a soup or appetizer in Restaurants.Rasam is made with Tamarind water, tomatoes and with a combination of spices like cumin and Pepper. The cumin and the pepper helps in healing cold and cough, espcially in winters.
Rasam is combined with hot mashed rice and a dash of pure ghee and served like a porridge.Toddlers and old people have rasam rice because it is light and easily digestible.
We make so many different types of Rasam in our house like                                                     Paruppu ,Pepper,Jeera,Poondu,Pineapple Vepam poo etc but the most common are tomato and paruppu rasam which is made every other day.I love (everyone would love this)the rasam rice my mother used to make and feed me when I am sick.

Sweet Lassi/Sweet Cardamom Lassi

Lassi is a cooling and refreshing drink for the summer. There are two types of Lassi - sweet and salt. Most of us prefer the sweet one like me, i am sure.It is very soothing in this summer.Lassi is a very popular drink in Punjab and north India where it is served in a tall glass with a scoop of makan or butter on top.
However now a days we cannot eat so much butter and drink such thick lassis, so i have written a moderately thick and tasty lassi with cardamom flvour in it.You can even add rose essence to it.I always prefer sweet lassi with rose or cardamom flavour in it.

Mangai Pachidi/Tamil New Year Recipes

Happy Tamil New Year to All Readers. This is the first festival when the new year begins so it is a special one.Usually my mother makes payasam, vadai and manga pachidi with neem flowers espcially for this occassion and of course special Kolam with Semman or Kavi .The special item in the new year menu is the mangai pachidi. It is made with five different tastes which includes sweetness from the jaggery, salt, chili, sourness from the mango and the bitterness from the neem flowers.
We ask my mother to make the maga pachidi as per rules for the neivedhyam and a lot more for us to eat seperately. My mother would get the perfect(quantity) combination of sweet, sour, salt and chilli and we would have a couple of more servings even after finishing the sapadu or the meal.It is a real finger licking food!!!!(dish)

Summer has not even started fully and I am already making all those summer drinks for the kids.Oreo milkshake is their favourite one and it is quite easy to make one.You throw a dollop of vanilla ice cream or any other flavour and add some crunchy broken pieces of biscuits in that and it tastes heavely.

Corn and Methi Pulao

This is the first time i am trying a pulao in a pressure pan.I always cook the rice seperatley and mix with the vegetables and masala or put in in the electric rice cooker. But i prefer cooking the rice seperately cooling the rice and then mixing with the masala. When i was looking for this(corn and methi pulao) recipe most of the recipe said only the pressure cooker method so i decided to follow the same. You just have to be careful about the water quantity and the time for cooking.Corn and methi pulao came out very well the whole house was so aromatic with the corn, methi and the butter!!!!

Andhra Pesarattu Dosai

Pesarattu Dosai is a very popular type of Dosa in Andhra Pradesh.I have had it only once or twice.Actually it is very nutritious because it is made out of Moong dal and not rice.Little bit of rice is added to give crispness to the dosa.It is usually had with Ginger chutney called "allam pachidi" which is also popular in Andhra. You can make the ginger chutney a little watery to go with the dosa.

Pizzadilla(Quesidilla Pizza)

Pizzadillas  are nothing but simple form of pizza done on the stove top with Tortillas. It is very similar to quesidillas which has a mexican filling where as pizzadilla is more like a thin pizza with pizza toppings.  I thought let me try out with left over chapathis or rotis which is more healthy.                                                                 After trying out bread pizza and similar pizza flavoured recipes i thought why dont i try this one with left over rotis.Yes you can create a delicious snack with leftover chapathis or rotis called pizzadilla  (quesidilla pizza). It is incredibly easy to make and tastes awesome!I am sure your kids will love it and your rotis will not go waste.
