Onion Pakoda/Onion Thool Pakoda

Onion pakodas are a very tasty and popular South Indian fried snack. It is available in every nook and corner sweet shop in the streets of Tamil Nadu.I just love the aroma of these pakodas.I love the pakodas stacked in a heap with a spring of curry leaf on top of it, in the sweet  and snack shops.I remember when we were kids and when we used to go on religious trips I used to get the aroma of these pakodas from the sweet and snack shop near the hotel we used to stay and bug my uncle to buy some for me.It is a perfect evening snack with a cup of filter Coffee. It tastes great as an accompaniment for sambar rice and curd rice also.

You will Need
  • Two Onions cut Lengthwise
  • 1/4 cup Gram flour
  • 1/4 cup Rice or Corn flour
  • One tsp Chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp Crushed Fennel seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Grated Ginger
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil to Deep fry
  • One spring of Curry Leaves
How to
1.Cut the onions lengthwise and separate them into single pieces.
2.To the chopped onions add rice or corn flour, chilli powder, shredded ginger, powdered saunf(fennel seeds)and curry leaves.
3.Mix well. The water from the onions is enough to mix.
4.Sprinkle gram flour and make sure all the onions get coated with the powder.
5. The pieces should be sprinkled into the oil. Take care to avoid large clumps. Fry in medium heat flame.
6.Allow it to brown and crisp, and then drain it onto a tissue paper.
Enjoy with a cup of hot filter coffee !

Notes
  • Adding fennel seeds purely optional. If you prefer you can add some crushed garlic also.
  • This is a crisp and 'thool' pakoda. If you want to make the normal pakoda make a paste of the gram flour, rice flour along with onions and spices and make bigger dumplings then deep fry it.
  • If it is not crispy add a pinch of soda to the dough.
