Ridge gourd and Channa Kootu

You can call it a Kootu, Dal or a Subzi. It has moong dal and Kabuli Channa if you want to call it a Dal. It has Ridge Gourd (vegetable) and the Moong to call it a Kootu. The only one thing missing for a Kootu, is the Coconut. I thought it would go well with some Phulkas and tried out the recipe. This combo of Ridge Gourd and Kabuli Channa with some Moong Dal for binding, fulfills all our requirements while being easy. It is a very light summer recipe, without much Oil and Coconut.

  • Quarter cup Yellow Moong Dal
  • Two Chopped Onions
  • Two Chopped Tomatoes

  • Two Tbs of Oil
  • One tsp of Cumin seeds
  • A Pinch of Turmeric powder
  • Two Tsp of Sambhar Powder
  • Salt to Taste
  • One tps of Jaggery powder
  • Juice from one lemon

How to
1.Soak the kabuli channa for 4-6 hours and pressure cook it until soft.pressure cook the yellow moong dal in the same cooker.

2.Heat Oil in a pan crackle cumin seeds and fry Onions, green chillies and curry leaves.

3.Add tomatoes, turmeric powder and fry till till they are mushy.
4.Add the chopped Ridge gourd(peel of the skin and cut into cubes),add salt and sprinkle some water cover and cook until the vegetable is soft.

5.Once the vegetable is cooked add sambhar powder, salt, boiled channa and some water and boil for two minutes.Add the boiled yellow moong dal boil until you get the gravy consistency.(if it is thick add some water).Add chopped coriander leaves and lime juice and jaggery.give it a stir and transfer in to a serving dish.
