Pidi Kozhukattai

Pidi Kozhukattai or Upma Kozhukattai is yet another traditional recipe. It is made with broken Raw rice,Spices and Coconut. "Pidi", in Tamil means "Catch".You make these Kozhukattais by shaping them in your palm and hence, the name. The pictures will give you a better understanding.
My mother used to soak the raw rice for ten minutes, drain the water and dry it on a white cloth. She then made it into a coarse powder in the mixer and  used it. Nowadays, Super Markets have ready-made broken raw rice which is a convenient option.

You will Need
  • 250gms Broken Raw Rice
  • Two-four Green Chillies
  • One tbs Mustard seeds
  • One tbs Channa dhal
  • Two Tbs Chopped Coconut pieces
  • Two Tbs Coconut Oil
  • Few Curry Leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • One fourth Tsp of Asafoetida

How to
1.Heat Oil in a pan. Crackle the mustard seeds, add channa dhal, chopped green chillies, coconut pieces and curry leaves.

2.Fry for a minute and add water(two and half times the raw rice)and allow it to boil.Add salt and asafoetida.

3.When the water starts boiling add the broken raw rice and mix well.cover and cook till the rice is cooked.
Stir in between to avoid any lumps.

4.Let it cool for a while.(spread it on a plate and allow it to cool).Take a small portion and roll it in to a cylindrical dumpling. Repeat with the rest of the Upma and arrange it on a steam plate.

5.Cover and steam it for 8-10 minutes.Enjoy with some Coconut chutney, tomato chutney or gothsu.

Notes

  • You can use scraped coconut instead of coconut pieces.
  • Use of coconut oil gives a good flavour.
