Gujarati Dal

                                                                    I have been wanting to post this recipe in a long time.Though it is very easy to make it took me so long to post it.It is simple Tur dal cooked in Gujarati style.They call it "khatta meeta" dal because it is a little sweet and spicy.It comes in really handy when you run out of ideas or vegetables!!!!Plain basmati rice with this dal with a dash of Ghee tastes heavenly!!!!





You will Need

  • One cup Tur dal
  • Half a tsp Turmeric powder
  • Two to three Tomatoes
  • One Onion
  • Two tbs of Ghee
  • One tsp Cumin seeds
  • Two Cloves
  • Few Green chillies
  • One tsp Grated Ginger
  • One tsp Red chilli powder
  • A pinch of Asafoetida
  • Salt to taste
  • Lime Juice from one lemon
  • Two tbs of Jaggery or Sugar
  • Chopped Coriander Leaves

How to 

  • Pressure cook the dal with one chopped Tomato and turmeric powder.Mash it well and keep it aside.
  • Heat ghee in a pan crackle cumin seeds,cloves,green chilli,ginger,asafoetida and chopped onions.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes,salt chilli powder  and cook tomatoes are mushy.
  • Add the mashed dal and allow it to simmer in low flame for five minutes.Add jaggery.
  • Add lemon juice and garnish with coriander leaves.








Notes

  • You can prepare this same recipe with yellow dal also.but gujarti dal is made with Tur dal.
  • You can use Tamarind extract instead of Lemon juice.
