Beetroot Masal Vadai/Chettinad cusine

All of us love Beetroot in our house, but we've never heard of  "Beet root vadai" ever before. I saw the recipe on one of the TV cookery shows. It was interesting and sounded very tasty and healthy too. I thought let me record it on the blog before I forget .Then I looked for the same recipe in the internet and it says it is a Chettinad specialty. It sounds interesting, so let us see the output!

The sweetness in the beetroot blends with the dal and makes it really tasty.I don't need to mention the health benefits of beetroot!!!It tastes great on its own and does not need any accompaniment. However you can enjoy it with any chutney of your choice!!!

You will Need
  • One cup Channa dal
  • One small cup shredded Beetroot
  • One chopped Onion
  • Two Red chillies
  • Two Green chillies
  • One tbs of Fennel seeds
  • One tsp Ginger garlic paste
  • One small piece of Cinnamon
  • Two Cloves
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil to deep fry.

How to

  • Shred the beetroot.

  •  First grind fennel seeds, ginger, garlic, cloves, cinnamon stick, red chillies and green chillies along with a tbs of channa dal.

  •  Add rest of the channa dal and grind to a coarse paste.do not add water to grind(this will make the vadai break when put in oil)

  •  Add the shredded beetroot, chopped onion, coriander and curry leaves and salt and mix well.

  •  Take a small portion make a round first and then flatten in your palm as shown in the picture.

  •  Heat oil in a deep pan and drop the lentil dumplings in hot oil and fry on both sides.

  •  Drain in paper towel.

  • Enjoy it when it is hot and it tastes good otherwise too.
