Thakkali Vathakozhambu/Tomato Vathakozhambu

                                                              Now it is plenty of Red Tomatoes everywhere i wanted to make this kozhambu.All of us in our family, my aunts and uncles are fond of Tomatoes and we have an extra doze of tomatoes in all the dishes.My aunt makes this vathakozhambu with tomatoes.It brings down the spice of the vathakozhambu and it is very tasty.It is a variation from the normal vathakozhambu and a treat to those who love tomatoes.


You will Need

  • Three to four Tomatoes
  • A small piece of Tamarind 
  • Ten small Onions
  • Two tbs Gingelly Oil
  • One tsp Mustard seeds
  • One tsp Turdhal
  • 1/2 tsp Fenugreek seeds
  • Few Red chillies
  • A pinch of Turmeric powder
  • Two tsp Sambar powder
  • One tsp Powdered jaggery
  • Salt to taste
  • A pinch of Asafoetida
  • Few Curry Leaves


How to
1.Boil water drop the tomatoes boil for a minute and switch off the stove.take out the tomatoes and allow it to cool.Soak the tamarind in hot water and extract pulp two to three times and keep aside.
2.Heat oil in a pan crackle mustard seeds,add tur dhla,fenugreek seeds and red chillies.
3.Add chopped small onions,curry leaves and fry for a minute and then add tamarind water.
Add turmeric powder, sambar powder and salt
Allow it to boil and add jaaggery powder or small piece of jaggery.
Peel the skin of the tomatoes and puree it in a mixer.
Pour it in to the boiling mixture.
Let it boil for few minutes until everything comes together.add asafoetida and switch off the stove.
Enjoy the thakkali kozhambu with hot rice and gingelly oil with some mild curry and papad.

Notes

  • Adding jaggery is optional because as such the tomatoes will bring down the spice.
  • This kozhambu can be an accompaniment for idlis,dosas and pongal too.
