Parangikkai puli Itta Curry/Pumpkin in Tamarind Gravy

Parangikkai is red pumpkin in Tamil. There are a number of dishes made out of this vegetable(it is called mathan in Malayalam/Kerala) especially in Kerala. This is a very traditional dish I learnt from my grandmother. It is somewhat like Araichuvitta Sambhar with little variation. As the name says suggests, sour taste is dominant in this dish.

You will Need
  • 250gms of Red Pumpkin
  • Half a cup Tur dhal
  • Small Lemon sized ball of Tamarind
  • A pinch of Turmeric powder
  • Gingelly Oil to Roast and Temper
  • One tsp of Mustard seeds
  • A generous pinch of Asafoetida
  • One tsp of Jaggery or more
  • Salt to Taste
  • Few Curry Leaves
To Roast and Grind
  • One Tbs of Channa dhal
  • One Tbs of Coriander seeds
  • 6-7 Red Chillies
  • Two Tbs of Scraped Coconut
How to
1.Soak tamarind in hot water and extract pulp three times by adding water.

2.Cut pumpkin into medium sized blocks and boil it in the tamarind water with salt and turmeric powder.
3.Roast the channa dhal, coriander seeds and red chillies till brown and add the coconut and saute for few seconds and switch off.Let the mixture cool.
4.Powder it and keep it ready.
5.Pressure cook the Tur dhal and keep it ready.
6.Once the pumpkin is cooked add the dhal and the ground powder.
7.Add some jaggery and let it boil for two minutes.
8.Heat oil in a pan and crackle mustard seeds and pour it on the kozhambu.
 9.Garnish with some curry leaves.
Have it with some hot steamed rice and some papads.
