Ingredients
- One cup of Raw rice broken
- One tbs of Peanuts
- Few spoons of Coconut scrapings
- Few Curry leaves
- Half a tsp of Asafoetida
- Two cups of water
- One tsp of Mustard seeds
- Two tsp of Channa Dal
- Few tsp of Coconut oil
- Four Red chillies
- One handful Tur dhal
- One tsp Cumin seeds
- One tsp Pepper
Soak the peanuts overnight or for few hours.
Method
1.Wash and soak the rice for twenty minutes.Drain the water and allow it to dry on a cloth for half an hour.
2.Meanwhile powder turdhal,cumin seeds and pepper in to a coarse powder.
3.Pulse it two or three times and it should be done.
4.When the rice is dry put it in to the mixer.
5.Powder it coarsely in the pulse mode in the mixer.
6.Seive the rice to remove the fine powder and keep it aside.
7.Heat oil in a small cooker or a thick pan crackle mustard seeds.
8.Add channa dal,urad dal and red chilies after the dals become brown.
9..Add two cups of water,curry leaves,asafoetida,coconut scrapings and soaked peanuts.
9.Add the coarse pepper,cumin and turdhal powder.
10.When the water is boiling add the raw rice brokens.Stir continously to avoid lumps.
11.Mix well and close the cooker and cook for three whistles and five minutes more.
12.Open the cooker check for salt,add a tsp of coconut oil and mix again.
Enjoy the traditonal upma with Kathrikkai gothsu and coconut chutney!!!!
Notes
- If you want the upma to be soft add some more water while cooking.
- You can add some chopped ginger to the upma while cooking.
- you can add a piece of jaggery to enhance the taste.
- Adjust the chillies and pepper according to your taste.
