Vegetable Gotsu/Accompaniment for Idli,Dosa and Pongal

                                                                There are different types of Gotsu and the most popular one is with brinjal,tamarind and 'Gotsu Podi' which i have posted earlier.Vegetable gotsu is a mild gotsu with lot of vegetables and cooked yellow moong dal.It is best when combined with Ven Pongal also goes with Idlis,dosas and Arisi upma.My Chitti makes this often and i learnt this recipe from her .She sometimes adds a little Lemon juice at the end.She even makes it as an accompaniment for chapathis.


You will Need

  • 1/4 cup Moong Dal
  • One Chopped Onion
  • One Chopped Tomato
  • Two to Four small Brinjal
  • One small Carrot
  • Two Green Chillies
  • One small piece Ginger
  • Few Curry Leaves
  • One tbs Coriander Leaves
  • One tbs Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • One tsp Mustard Seeds
  • One tsp broken Urad Dal
  • A pinch of Asafoetida
  • Salt to taste


How to
1.Pressure cook the yellow moong dal until mushy and keep aside
2.Chop the vegetables into small pieces and keep it ready.
3.Heat oil in a pan crackle mustard seeds,add urad dal let it brown add curry leaves and asafoetida.
 4.Add chopped onion,green chilli and ginger pieces fry for one minute.
 5.Add chopped tomato and other vegetables salt and turmeric powder and saute for two minutes.
6.Add a little water and allow it to boil for few minutes till the vegetables gets cooked.
 7.Add the cooked moong dal and mix well and let it boil till the gravy thickens.
 8.Add chopped coriander leaves and switch off the stove.
Enjoy this gotsu with some Ven Pongal,idlis or Dosas!!!!!!

Notes

  • You can include vegetables like Red Pumpkin,One potato or beans along with other vegetables for this gotsu.
  • You can add some Lemon juice at the end or some Tamrind extract while frying the vegetables for a tangy taste.Even otherwise it tastes good.
  • The cooked dal adds volume and makes the gravy thick so do not add more than specified else it will tastes like dal.
