Paasi Paruppu Masiyal

This is the first time I am trying this Paasi Paruppu(yellow dal) Masiyal. This is my Iyengar friend's recipe( i am not too sure if it is a Iyengar recipe).Whether it is Iyengar recipe or not it came out very well and was tasting heavenly.
I really ran out of ideas and vegetables for the Kozhambu or main gravy today!! only then my friends recipe came to my mind and i decided to make it.It was simple and didn't need any vegetable other than tomatoes.
It is very similar to the north Indian  yellow dal. It tastes heavenly with hot rice and topped with a spoon of desi ghee.It is very simple to make that is why i have not posted step-wise pictures.

You will Need

  • Half cup Moong dal
  • Three Tomatoes
  • Two Green chillies
  • Two tsp of Sambar powder
  • One tbs of Tamarind extract
  • A pinch of Turmeric powder
  • Two tbs of Oil of Ghee
  • One tsp Mustard seeds
  • A generous pinch of Asafoetida
  • Few Curry Leaves
  • Salt to taste

How to
  • Pressure cook the dal with a pinch of Turmeric powder.Chop the tomatoes and green chill and keep aside. If you are using tamarind soak it in hot water and extract the pulp.(you can use lemon juice instead of tamarind juice also)
  • Heat oil of ghee crackle mustard seeds, throw curry leaves, green chillies , asafoetida and the tomatoes.
  • Cook till the tomatoes get mushy.Add Tamarind extract, sambar powder and boil till the raw smell goes.
  • Add the cooked moong dal, salt and add some water if required to get the consistency.Boil till everything combines and comes together.
Enjoy with steaming rice and ghee!!!!

This is very similar to the recipe in "Samaippadu Eppadi" by Vedavalli -- an ancient book in Tamil and English that I have carried with me for the last 20+ years! It is indeed an Iyengar recipe, my grandmother used to make it often.

How different is this from regular sambar?

Regular sambar we use tur dhal here it is yellow dal.
we use different vegetable like radish, pumpkin in regular sambar and boil them in tamarind water.here we don't.

This is a typical Iyengar weekday recipe. I grew up eating it but my grandmother and mom used to add Vendhaya Podi instead of milagai podi and the one thing that brought this whole dish together is the generous squeeze of lime juice in the end. Such a winner!
