Lemon Rasam

We South Indians especially Tamils make so many different kinds of "Rasam".Most of them are Tamarind based with Pepper and Cumin in it.Lemon Rasam is made with Dhal water and Lime juice for the sour taste. The Spice of green chillies and the ginger makes it more different than the usual rasam.
This is my husbands favourite rasam but unfortunatley my kids do not like it.I usually make it on those days i make milagau kozhambu or vathkozhambu so that i avoid tamarind in the rasam and include some dhal.

You Will Need

  • Quarter Cup Tur dhal
  • Two Green chillies
  • One tsp Shredded Ginger
  • Few Curry Leaves
  • Few Corinder leaves
  • One Tomato
  • Juice from one Lemon
  • A generous pinch of Asafoetida
  • Salt to Taste
  • A Pinch of Turmeric powder
  • One tsp of Ghee
  • One tsp of Mustard seeds

 How to

  • Pressure cook the Tur dhal with  a pinch of Turmeric powder.Mash it well and add two portions more of water to it.Add  asafoetida, salt, slit green chillies, shredded ginger, chopped tomato, curry leaves, coriander leaves and allow it to boil till the tomatoes gets mushy.

  • You can add half a tsp of sambar powder if you prefer.once the tomatoes are mushy heat one tsp of ghee in a small pan crackle mustard seeds in that and pour it over the rasam. If the rasam becomes a little thick add a little hot water so that you get the watery consistency.Add the Lemon juice and mix well.Do not boil after adding the lemon juice.
  • Enjoy the rasam with some hot rice and ghee on it.

  • Tempering in ghee is important like for any other rasam.
  • If you are used to making rasam in Eeya patram do not make lemon rasam in it.The lemon will react.
  • Using tomato is also optional. It is healthy and tasty so i have added it.

Lovely, lovely rasam! The only change I made was to add some freshly powdered/ crushed jeera and pepper after it boiled for a bit. Excellent taste. Thanks for sharing!
