Nel Pori/Aval Pori Urundai/Karthigai Deepam Recipes

Karthigai Deepam is a festival of lights for the Tamilians. It is celebrated in the month of karthigai. We light lamps (agal vilakku) all over the house, light all the lamps possible in the house, put decorative kolams and place the big kuthuvilakkus on them.
I remember my mother making Pori Urundai in the afternoon. We used to go to the pori kadalai  kadai where they used to make these special Nel pori and aval pori for karthigai. Nowadays, it is available in the supermarkets itself. Some of them make only Nel pori and some othem make both.We make both types in our house.Apart from the pori urundais we make appam, vella adai, uppu adai for neivedhyam.

It is the same procedure to make both urundais. If you measure four cups of pori take one cup of powdered jaggery.Preferable use pagu vellam for best results.

You will Need
  • 200gms of Nel pori
  • Jaggery(4:1)
  • sliver-ts of Coconut
  • Small piece of Dry Ginger
  • Ghee
  • Rice flour
  • 1/4 tsp Cardamom powder

  • Powder the jaggery and dissolve it in hot water (if you are using  two cups of jaggery, dissolve it in half cup water  and filter for impurities.) Reheat the jaggery solution and boil it till it becomes thick.(use minimal water to dissolve otherwise it will take a long time to become thick.

  • Keep a small bowl of water and while the jaggery is boiling drop a small bit in to the water. If it is thick and you are able to roll it in to a ball then it is the consistency to make the urundais.

  •  The jaggery should be able to be moulded like ball.

  •  Add the slivered coconut pieces and powdered cardamom and dry ginger.

  • Switch off the stove at this stage and pour the jaggery mixture over nel or aval pori in a wide plate or bowl.mix well with a ladle so that the jaggery spreads evenly.

  •  Rub your hands with rice flour or ghee and mould the pori into a small cone(paruppu thengai)first(make 2of them).

  •  Rest of the mixture mould it into small balls.

  • Repeat the same with aval pori also.

You will Need
  • 200gms of Aval pori
  • Jaggery
  • Slivered Coconut pieces.
  • Small Piece of Dry Ginger
  • Ghee
  •  Rice flour
  • 1/4tsp Cardamom powder

Spread the aval pori on a wide plate or a bowl.pour jaggery mixture or pagu on this and mix well with a laddle. When it is mixed thoroughly mould them in to two small cones and rest in to small balls.

Btw, don't we add either peanuts or pottukadalai in either of these urundai's?
