Akkaravadisal

Akkaravadisal is a popular Iyengar sweet. You must have tasted it in a lot of vaishnav temples as prasadam. It is similar to sarkarai pongal except that it is cooked in water for sarkarai pongal whereas the Rice and Dal are cooked in milk for Akkaravadisal. In the original recipe, it is sweetened with Jaggery while I have used Sugar. You can use either one.

You will Need
  • One cup of Raw Rice
  • One Handful of Yellow Moong dal
  • Four Cups of Milk
  • One to One and half cup Sugar
  • Ghee to taste
  • Few Strands of Saffron
How to
Wash the rice and dal. Heat one tbs of ghee in a pan and roast the rice and dal till you get a nice aroma.
Add four cups of Milk and few saffron strands to it, pour it in a tall vessel and pressure cook for 3 whistles and five minutes in low flame.Let the milk and rice fill only half the vessel because milk has a tendency to overflow.
Once the rice and dal is cooked mash it(add little milk if it is thick).Pour it in a non stick pan,add sugar and heat.Let the sugar melt and become sticky add some ghee.

If you prefer you can add some cashewnuts and raisins fried in ghee.Add as much ghee as you wish it tastes great when it is hot.

I always thought that it was made with sugar. My amma used to make it for venkatachalapathy samaradhanai and I loved it.
