Upma/Rawa Upma

Upma is the most simple and popular south Indian breakfast. It can be made in a jiffy and in so many different ways.I have posted just the basic recipe for beginners.I have also posted an elaborate version previously with step wise pictures.
Not many are fond of upma when they are young. But as a child, I used to love upma - especially with all the veggies in it. My mother used to make the best upma. She used to make it with only Tomatoes on fasting days for my grandmom and I used to wait for my grand mom to offer me a bite. It used to taste heavenly ! She would fry some cashews in ghee and garnish it sometimes. However my sister was not very fond of Upma when she was in school. My grand father used to tease her saying her evening snack was upma and she would freak out ! Once you grow up and start cooking, you want to try all recipes - especially the easy ones like upma which comes in handy and as a saviour a lot of times.

You will Need(serves 3-4)O
  • One small cup of Rawa or Semolina

How to

1.Dry roast the Rawa or sooji or semolina in a pan until you get an aroma and when it just starts changing colour. Transfer it into a plate and keep it aside.
    2.Chop the onions,ginger,green chillies.
    3. Rinse the pan and heat it again.heat the oil and crackle mustard seeds.Add canna dal, urad dal and allow it to brown till golden colour.
4.Add chopped onion, green chilli, ginger and curry leaves and fry for two minutes.
5.Add hot water and salt and allow it to boil.
6.When the water starts boiling add the roasted rawa or sooji slowly by stirring with the other hand otherwise there would be lumps.
7.Keep stirring until all the water is absorbed lower the flame and cover it.
8.Cover and cook for 4-5 minutes.
9.once it is cooked you can fluff it with a laddle. If you prefer you can drizzle little bit of lemon juice.
Enjoy the upma for a simple breakfast with a hot filter coffee!!!!!!

    Notes
    • To get a better taste you can add some fried cahsewnuts in ghee and add it to the upma finally.
    • You can add some vegetables like green peas carrot etc to make it more whole some.
    • You can add some lemon juice or add chopped tomato pieces after adding onion to get a tangy taste.
